Tracking Code Implementation Procedure & Details

Add the tracking code to your pages
MVI SPY only tracks pages that contain the SPY tracking code. You'll need to add this code to each page of your site, either manually or through the use of includes or other methods.

To access your tracking code:
To acquire the script you must sign up at Free Trial at MVI SPY When the sign up procedure is complete the system will instruct you how to login and acquire your code. The code is found on the home page by clicking a green icon called 'tracking code'. That code must be placed on all pages of your site. That code will look similar to this -

<!-- mviSPY -->
<script language="javascript" src="http://stats.mvispy.com/mvispy.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<!-- /mviSPY -->

Your tracking code can be copied and pasted from the text box in the instructions directly from your control panel.

Basic installation -
Copy and paste the code segment into the bottom of your content for all pages you wish to track, immediately before the </body> tag of each page you are planning to track. If you use a common 'include' or template footer, you can easily enter it there.

Once you've completed this step, SPY will begin collecting traffic data. You'll be able to see data in your reports within minutes.

Database driven sites -
Insert the tracking code on your index.php page or equivalent (eg. default.php, index.cfm).

Pages with frames -
A web page containing frames will generate multiple page views: one for the framing page (containing either a FRAMESET or IFRAME tag within its HTML code), and one for each page shown in a frame. As a result, page views may be somewhat inflated. Even if a page on your site only appears as a frame for another page, we still recommend tagging it with the entire tracking code. If a visitor reaches the page through a search engine or a direct link from another site and the page doesn't contain the tracking code, the referral, keyword and/or campaign information from the source will be lost.

How can I confirm that I've entered the tracking code correctly on my pages?
If you used a WYSIWYG ("What you see is what you get") editor such as Macromedia Dreamweaver, make sure that you don't see the code when you're viewing your page in a browser. The code should be invisible while visiting your site through a browser. Some such editors will attempt to place the code as text on your page - try to use the "source" view when you're pasting the code to your web pages. Once your page is live, select View Source from your browser's menu and look for the code. It should be immediately before the tag of your page, and should look exactly as it was provided to you:

<!-- mviSPY -->
<script language="javascript" src="http://stats.mvispy.com/mvispy.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<!-- /mviSPY --><br/><br/>

If your tracking code has been installed correctly, and you're still not seeing data after minutes try visting our support page here.

How long does it take to see report data after adding the tracking code?
MVI SPY updates immediately and your reports should start showing within minutes. We recommend that after the code is live that you click on your home page and navigate around your site. Then login into SPY and verify that all pages you visited are reported correctly by viewing the Traffic Analysis > Top Trails Section. If you've installed the tracking code correctly and are still not able to see data then the tracking codes are set up incorrectly and you need to view possible problems below:

Incorrect tracking code
The most common reason why you're not seeing any data in your reports is because of an error in the SPY tracking code. Copying the tracking code from your account to a word processor may add an extra space or change the quotation marks in the tracking code by the time you paste it to your website. We suggest copying the code again and pasting it directly onto your website.

Incorrect filter settings in Reports Section
Incorrect filter settings can affect the data you see, and may unintentionally filter all of your data from your reports. This happens most frequently due to incorrect reports settings. To fix Login > Reports Section > Edit Reports > review the data that you have checked to be sure your report is providing you the data that you need.

Viewing Incorrect Account
If you have access to multiple Analytics accounts, you may be looking at the wrong account. Please verify the account name at the top of the SPY report is the website that you wish to view. Multiple account holders have drop-down menu at the top right of the screen to select the account you'd like to view.

Using both Urchin software and MVI SPY
If you are using Urchin software in addition to SPY to track your website, you may have both __utm.js and ga.js referenced from your pages. You'll need to update your pages to use the correct code.

Using an Outdated Version of ga.js
If you are hosting the ga.js file locally, you may be using an outdated version of this file. You can download the most up-to-date version and install or you might consider letting MVI host these files for your site. See Hosting Solutions..

Interfering Scripts
Other scripts on your pages could be using some of the same variables as the ga.js file, and therefore interfering with the tracking code execution. If you're using additional scripts on your pages, consider moving the tracking code into the section of the page. This way, the tracking code will work correctly, and it won't interfere with the rest of your scripts.

Outdated Flash plugin and disabled JavaScript
If you are unable to see the report interface properly, download the latest Flash plugin (7.x or higher) and make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser.

A note for Linux users:
The Flash implementation for Linux can be very problematic, and users of Debian and Ubuntu seem to be especially affected. We're aware of these issues, but due to the lack of updates and Flash plugin development for Linux, we may be unable to support your browser and operating system combination at this time.

Visits from China
Due to the way internet traffic is handled in China, some visits from China may be under reported in SPY. While this issue is not unique to SPY we do take the issue seriously and are working to find solutions. You can continue to use SPY to analyze overall traffic trends and patterns for your site as the decrease has been proportionally consistent during this period.

Tracking transactions across domains and sub-domains -
If you are tracking transactions that occur on a different domain or sub-domain than your main site, read How do I use MVI SPY to track a 3rd-party shopping cart - instructions on updating your tracking code. MVI SPY uses 1st party cookie technology to track visitors and generate reports. 1st party cookies require that the JavaScript code be called from each web page to avoid breaching the security settings in your visitors' web browsers. If you can edit the source code of your shopping cart site and add the MVI SPY tracking code, you'll be able to use it with SPY.
